Grading Your Wool

The Co-operative grades and markets approximately 3 million pounds of raw wool each year.

Wool is received directly from the producer by way of truck or rail.

It is then graded according to type classification, quality and method of preparation.

Jim McNeely and Pat Lamothe grade each fleece by hand at the Carleton Place warehouse, Monday to Friday, year round.

The grading process starts with:

QUALITY CONTROL

Involves the separation of all wool that is

     Contaminated with chaff,

     Stained with urine

Contaminated with dags, plastic twine etc.

Comment: With proper on-farm fleece preparation, this stage could be eliminated and the savings passed on to the producer. Proper fleece preparation brings better rewards.
