Angora goats originated on the Anatolian Plains of Turkey near the city now known as Ankara, from which the name Angora is derived. The fibre they produce, mohair, is believed to take its name from the Arabic word mukhayyar. For centuries, Angora goats were highly valued and carefully protected from export. They were introduced to Spain and France in the sixteenth century and later to the United States in 1849. From there, the breed spread internationally, including to Canada, where it remains an important fibre-producing goat.
Angoras are best known for producing mohair, a long, lustrous fibre prized for its strength, sheen, and excellent dye affinity. The fleece grows in distinctive ringlets and is typically shorn twice per year. Mohair is used in fine apparel, upholstery fabrics, blankets, and specialty yarns. They are generally white, although coloured strains do exist. Angora goats have a small to medium frame, long drooping ears, and both bucks and does may carry horns. Their most recognizable feature is their flowing, curly fleece. Angoras are typically calm and manageable but are more delicate than many meat or dairy goat breeds. Because they are bred primarily for fibre rather than hardiness, they require attentive management. While adaptable to various climates, they are less weather-resistant immediately after shearing and require shelter during cold or wet conditions. Good parasite management and balanced nutrition are important to maintain fleece quality.
Angora goats are raised primarily for mohair production and serve both small-scale and commercial fibre operations. Their fleece supports specialty yarn markets, textile production, and value-added fibre products.
The Angora goat produces one of the world’s most lustrous natural fibres. Mohair is strong, durable, lightweight, and takes dye exceptionally well. The breed remains a cornerstone of the global mohair industry and continues to be valued by Canadian producers dedicated to high-quality fibre production.
