The llama is a domesticated South American camelid that has been used by Andean cultures since pre-Hispanic times. Traditionally valued as both a meat and pack animal, llamas played an essential role in transportation and food production in mountainous regions. They were introduced to North America in the late twentieth century, where they have since become established in farming, fibre, and livestock guardian roles.
Llamas are highly social animals that prefer to live in herds. They are intelligent and capable of learning simple tasks after only a few repetitions. Their fibre is soft, naturally lanolin-free, and suitable for a range of textile applications. As pack animals, llamas are strong and efficient, capable of carrying up to 30 percent of their body weight for distances of five to eight miles. Adult llamas typically stand between 5.5 and 6 feet at the shoulder and weigh between 280 and 450 pounds. Their average lifespan ranges from 20 to 30 years.
Llamas are used as pack animals, fibre animals, and in some cases for meat production. In North America, they are also widely used as livestock guardian animals, particularly in sheep operations where predators such as coyotes are present. Typically, a single gelding is placed with a flock to deter predators.
Since the early 1980s, llamas have been successfully used as nonlethal livestock guardians, often reducing or eliminating predator losses. They require minimal training and relatively little care, making them a practical and cost-effective option for many producers. Their intelligence, longevity, and versatility continue to make them a valuable addition to Canadian farms.
