A Premises Identification Number (PID) is a unique national number assigned to a specific parcel of land by a provincial or territorial government.
A premises is defined as any location where animals or food are:
kept
assembled
raised or grown
marketed
or disposed of
This can include farms, hobby farms, abattoirs, auction markets, feedlots, veterinary clinics, and other locations where livestock or poultry are present.
Premises Identification is an important part of Canada's national livestock traceability system, which helps track animals and protect the safety of Canada's food supply.
Premises ID is one of the three core components of Canada's livestock traceability system:
Premises Identification
Animal Identification
Animal Movement Tracking
Together, these systems help authorities respond quickly in the event of an animal health or food safety emergency.
If a disease such as Foot and Mouth Disease, avian influenza, or another reportable disease were detected, traceability systems allow officials to quickly identify:
where animals came from
where they have moved
which farms or facilities may be affected
Fast response times help:
contain disease outbreaks
protect the health of livestock
maintain consumer confidence in Canadian food products
reduce economic impact on producers and the agricultural industry
The registration process is handled by provincial or territorial governments, so the exact steps may vary depending on where you live.
Generally, landowners or operators must provide basic information about the premises, including:
Legal land description or GPS coordinates
Owner or contact name and contact information
Name of the farm or operation (if applicable)
Type of premises (farm, auction market, abattoir, etc.)
Types of animals, plants, or food products that have been kept, assembled, grown, or disposed of on the premises in the past year
The information submitted is verified for accuracy and is protected under provincial privacy legislation.
There is no cost to register for a Premises ID.
Under the Authorized Medicine Sales Regulation (AMS Regulation), purchasers of certain livestock medications must provide their Premises Identification Number (PID) when buying these products.
This requirement helps ensure that animal health products are being sold responsibly and can be traced back to a specific location if necessary.
Authorized medicines are animal medications that have been approved by Health Canada and are identified by a Drug Identification Number (DIN).
These products may be sold through licensed retail outlets, including agricultural supply stores.
Tracking the location where these medicines are used helps support animal health monitoring and traceability within Canada's livestock industry.
