International Back to Back Wool Challenge
The International Back to Back Wool Challenge is a fast-paced, high-energy spinning competition held annually in countries around the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Scotland, Japan, the USA, and Canada. Each team hosts their event in a public location of their choice during the months of May or June, following the exact same rules worldwide.
The challenge brings together a team of eight: seven handspinners and knitters, and one blade shearer. Their mission is ambitious and inspiring - to shear a sheep, spin the wool, and knit a completed sweater using an official pattern, all within eight hours.
Beyond the competition, the event celebrates skill, teamwork, and the promotion of the wool industry at a local and international level. Many teams also use the challenge as an opportunity to raise funds for charity, including cancer research, while building lasting connections within the global fibre community.
Canadian teams have proudly participated over the years with impressive results. Special recognition goes to the Toronto Spiders Team from the Greater Toronto Area, who achieved the best Canadian time in 2005, 2006, and 2009, and the best international time in 2007, 2008, and 2010. Their accomplishments are engraved on the trophy donated by the Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers Limited.
Each year, new and returning teams from Canada and around the world take up the challenge, and participation continues to grow.
