The Kiko goat originated in New Zealand in the 1980s through the crossing of feral goats with dairy breeds. The goal was to develop a hardy meat goat that required minimal management input while maintaining strong growth performance and survivability. The name “Kiko” comes from the Maori word meaning flesh or meat, reflecting the breed’s primary purpose. Through careful selection, the Kiko became known for its resilience and ability to thrive under challenging environmental conditions.
Kiko goats are large-framed animals recognized for rapid growth, strong maternal traits, and natural hardiness. They were specifically developed to perform well with limited supplemental feeding and minimal intensive management. The breed is generally white, although many animals carry genes for colour, and coloured Kikos can also be registered. Their coat varies with environment and season, remaining slick and short in summer while developing longer, flowing hair in colder or mountainous conditions. Kikos are valued for their structural soundness, parasite tolerance, and ability to thrive in pasture-based systems.
Kiko goats are raised primarily for meat production. They are especially well suited to extensive or low-input farming systems where durability, maternal ability, and efficient growth are essential.
The Kiko goat is widely recognized for its survivability, fast growth, and ability to perform with minimal producer intervention. Its adaptability to a range of climates and management styles makes it an attractive option for Canadian meat goat producers seeking efficiency and resilience.
