The Nigerian Dwarf goat descends from West African dwarf goats and was developed in North America as a miniature dairy breed. While small in stature, it was selectively bred for improved milk production and consistent conformation. Over time, the breed has gained popularity in Canada and the United States for its dairy qualities, manageable size, and suitability for small farms and hobby operations.
Nigerian Dwarf goats are compact, well-proportioned animals known for their friendly and engaging temperament. Despite their small size, they are capable milk producers, with milk that is notably high in butterfat, making it ideal for cheese, yogurt, and soap production. The breed comes in a wide variety of colours and patterns. Males typically stand between 19 and 23.5 inches (48 to 60 cm) at the withers, while females range from 17 to 22.5 inches (43 to 57 cm). Their manageable size and calm disposition make them especially popular for small acreages and youth projects.
Nigerian Dwarf goats are raised for dairy production, as companion or pet animals, and in some cases for meat. Their versatility makes them suitable for homesteads, 4-H programs, and small-scale commercial dairies.
The Nigerian Dwarf is valued for its high-butterfat milk, small size, and friendly temperament. Its adaptability, production efficiency, and appeal as both a productive and personable breed continue to support its growing popularity among Canadian producers.
