Nubian

Origin and History

The Nubian goat, often referred to as the Anglo-Nubian, was developed in England through the crossing of British goats with imported goats from Africa and the Middle East. The breed was refined for both dairy and meat qualities and has since become one of the most popular dual-purpose goats worldwide, including in Canada.

Breed Characteristics

The Nubian is a colourful breed, appearing in a wide range of coat colours and patterns. It is easily recognized by its long, pendulous ears and slightly convex facial profile. Nubians are strong dairy producers and are capable of producing up to six quarts of milk per day under proper management. Their milk is known for higher butterfat content, making it well suited for cheese and specialty dairy products. In addition to dairy performance, Nubians are well regarded for their size and muscling, making them one of the better meat-type dairy breeds available. They are generally alert, social animals and adapt well to a variety of management systems.

Primary Uses

Nubian goats are raised as a true dual-purpose breed, valued for both milk and meat production. They are well suited to homesteads, small farms, and commercial dairy operations.

The Nubian combines strong milk production, desirable butterfat levels, and solid meat conformation. Its adaptability, productivity, and distinctive appearance continue to make it a popular choice among Canadian goat producers.
