The Katahdin is a hardy, low-maintenance hair sheep breed developed for meat production and adaptability. Known for its natural shedding hair coat, the Katahdin requires little to no shearing and performs well in a wide range of climates and production systems. The breed is valued for its parasite resistance, maternal ability, and efficient forage conversion.

Katahdin rams are strongly distinguished by a prominent mane, while ewes are feminine and productive mothers. Lambs produce a naturally lean, well-muscled carcass with mild flavor, making the breed popular in commercial meat operations.

Le Katahdin est une race de mouton à poil robuste et nécessitant peu d’entretien, développée pour la production de viande et l’adaptabilité. Grâce à son pelage unique qui mue naturellement, le Katahdin ne nécessite peu ou pas de tonte et s’adapte bien à divers climats et systèmes de production. La race est reconnue pour sa résistance aux parasites, ses aptitudes maternelles et son efficacité en pâturage.

Les béliers Katahdin se distinguent par une crinière marquée, tandis que les brebis sont productives et maternelles. Les agneaux produisent une carcasse naturellement maigre et bien musclée.

Characteristics of Katahdin Sheep

General Appearance – Strong, hardy, low-maintenance sheep characterized by a unique hair/wool coat that sheds seasonally. Rams are strongly distinguished by a prominent mane. Lambs produce a naturally lean, well-muscled carcass.
