Wiltshire Horn Sheep, also referred to as Wiltshire Horned, are a medium-sized white sheep raised primarily for meat production. Both rams and ewes are horned, although breeders have also developed polled (naturally hornless) lines. Whether horned or polled, Wiltshires grow a heavy, coarse winter coat which they naturally shed in the spring, eliminating the need for shearing.
Wiltshires are known for their productivity and low-input management. Ewes typically produce twins by their second year and continue to lamb successfully without the need for grain supplementation during flushing or lactation. The breed is hardy, agile, and makes excellent use of rough pasture. They are also noted for requiring minimal parasite treatment. Their long frame is well muscled, producing lean, high-quality meat.
Beginning in 1951, Wiltshire Horn sheep were exported from the United Kingdom to Australia and New Zealand, and from there to the United States in the 1990s. Canadian flocks today originate from sheep imported from the USA. The breed is currently listed on the “Watch” list of The Livestock Conservancy in the United States, which provides the only North American registration for Wiltshire Horn sheep.
